Strawberry, raspberry and peach get the podium in yogurts

Yogurt is one of the essential foods of our daily diet, so much so that 80% of Spanish consumers take it regularly on a daily basis.

The Covid-19 pandemic has driven health concerns, particularly with regard to boosting the immune system. While the use of digestive health rankings fell overall in 2020, there was increasing use of immune health positionings, as well as in the related areas of probiotics and prebiotics, although the top five claims respond to low or no fat content, high of protein, no additives or preservatives, gluten free and digestive health.

Europe continues leading the world in terms of yogurt launches, consumption and sales value, reflecting the traditional popularity and high levels of production and consumption of spoonable and drinkable yogurts.

The leading flavours in this Dairy category are fruits, with strawberry taking the number one position in 2020, followed by raspberry, peach, blueberry and vanilla. There is a growing interest in more exotic, often tropical fruit flavours such as banana, coconut, passion fruit and dates, as well as more added value dessert style options such as stracciatella and spice flavours such as cinnamon.

Regarding yogurt launches and trends by European countries, they respond to the following classification: Germany leads the highest proportion of launches of dairy spoonable yogurt with 87% highlighting the consumer preferences for traditional, immune health, fortified with vitamins and minerals. The second place is occupied by France and the United Kingdom with 84%, for French consumers, natural, probiotic, bone health, children between 5 and 12 years old are preferred, while in the United Kingdom yogurt lactose free, no added sugar, immune health and natural are what motivate the purchase decision. Spain is also on this European podium with 71% of launches in Europe during 2018 to 2020 and its purchasing preferences are based on preferences such as traditional flavour, no added sugar and immune health, according to a study by Innova Market Insights.

At Cosmos we elaborated flavours for the yogurt category, natural and traditional profiles, such as strawberry, peach, others in trend such as passion fruit, cinnamon, stracciatella and with or without colouring to achieve the most demanding requirements of our clients.
